Something Blue

By Verna Fisher

We’ve all heard the “something blue” bridal saying: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.  Just where did “something blue” come from?  According to wedding lore, brides of early Israel wore a blue ribbon in their hair as a symbol of fidelity.  The Bible frequently refers to blue as a symbol of purity too.  And believe it or not, bridal dresses were actually blue until Queen Victoria made white fashionable during her 1840 wedding to Prince Albert.

The tradition of something blue has continued through the ages and brought with it the symbols of love and purity to the original fidelity meaning.  Today, most brides still wear something blue, but they have the opportunity to add their own personal flare.  While the traditional throw away garter often has blue in it, brides can choose accessories such as an anklet with a pale blue heart charm, necklace with blue accents or even earrings with blue crystals.  Putting an individual spin on an old-fashioned custom can make the bride’s day even more special.
